WILLIAMS POV
I knew the little brat would be trying to get away once she woke up. She was not only stubborn; she was also thick-headed.
Her stubbornness was one of the reasons I wanted to still have her around. Jack, my younger brother was back in town, and the competition to take over the family’s biggest company was getting tougher.
When I was told about the new investors willing to sign with the company, Liam suggested I hire a very responsible lady to accompany me to the function. In his words, “These guys will not take you seriously until they see that you’re successfully married to a lady from a renowned family too.”
There were lots of ladies I could have opted for, but for some reasons I decided to settle for Alice. She was still my wife, and most of these top investors would have made their findings about my past.
I had wanted it to be in the form of a proposal, but I knew better. Alice sulked at keeping to her own part of the bargain.
She had not said anything about being married, which made it perfect for whatever I needed her for.
She might not have been useful in the past, but I intend to make her as useful as possible this time around.
My alarm clock had just rung. It was time to get ready for the function.
My suit for the occasion was draped on the bed in a kingly style, and I smiled at the fitting it gave me when I tested it the day my PA brought it in from the company. It was their newest design, and I had instructed the company specifically on how I wanted it to be.
My attention is suddenly drawn to an incoming call. The number was unknown, something I found annoying as I barely gave out my contact information to people without having theirs in return.
I ignore the call but decide to pick it up when the ringing persists.
“Hello, this is Alice. I won’t be making it to the function with you.” Suddenly, there was silence at her end, and I became pissed when it dawned on me that she had just hung up on me.
“That twat! Has she grown worse at being mannerless? I spit these words out between clenched fists and gritted teeth.
“I wish I had strangled her the other day at the park.” I fumed.
I was not used to getting turned down, and even if I allowed it, it was usually after a series of pleas.
“Does she think that she gets to call the shots?”
I pace the room in anger. She was about to scatter my carefully thought-out plan, but I wasn’t going to give in.
I dialed the number again and was stunned by the response I got. In order to avoid getting a call from me, she had turned off her phone.
Julie was the next option. She would eagerly jump at the offer.
I dialed her number and listened as she ranted about how much she had missed me and was hoping to see me soon.
“I will pick you up in the next hour; do not keep me waiting.”
‘Of course, I won’t keep you waiting. I will definitely be ready for then.” She happily chipped in.
My bath was hastier than I anticipated. The meeting was in an hour’s time, and I had a thing for arriving on occasions earlier than stipulated. It was one of those things that being in the military embedded in me.
Carefully examining myself in the mirror, I smiled gleefully at the dashing appearance I was seeing in the mirror.
On my way to the office, I instructed my driver to drive me to the family hospital for a quick checkup. The heartbreak I had been experiencing for the past two days was becoming a thing of concern.
I was not scared of any underlying illness, but I was always careful when it came to matters pertaining to health and well-being.
At the hospital, I notice the gloomy air and the sad look on the faces of the visitors in the reception.
It was normal to see such faces at the hospital, not like the hospital was a place for happy people. It was definitely a place for people who had health challenges.
I called the receptionist and inquired about the situation, and she shook her head in pity. “We just lost the patient that was rushed in here yesterday night. The daughter just passed out on hearing the news, and her children have been crying since.”
“Has her family members been contacted to take the kids home?
“She arrived at the hospital in haste, and I think she forgot her phone at home.”
“So, where are the kids?
“They are in Dr. Ferdinard’s office.”
“Poor kids, they would definitely be traumatized now.”
I had just 25 minutes left to catch up with my meeting with the investors, and I was sure that my time would elapse by the time I’m done with my checkup. The kids seemed like they needed help, and seeing their condition seemed more important to me for some reasons than getting my checkup.
The kids were crying when I walked in, but immediately their eyes met mine; they suddenly stopped crying and only stared at me expectantly.
There was something about the boy; he looked like my younger self, and his poise confirmed this. He was looking me squarely in the eyes and only blinked when I walked towards them.
“I wasn’t expecting you today,” Dr. Ferdinand happily exclaimed, extending his hand for a handshake.
“Yeah, I have been having heartburn since yesterday and I decided to drop by for a quick checkup.”
“That’s okay. Sorry about the kids in the office; they are a certain patient’s children. She passed out earlier today after we broke the news of her father’s death to her.”
“So, what’s their mom’s name, and why haven’t any of her family members been contacted?
As Dr. Ferdinard opened his mouth to speak, a call came into my phone, and I excused myself to answer the call.
