William’s POV

My mind keeps drifting back to the helpless kids I saw at the hospital, especially the boy.

I was bodily present in the meeting, but my mind was somewhere else.

The investors noticed this. I saw it in their stares, but I guess they didn’t want to pry into my private life.

The contract was awarded to me and the signing was done without hesitation.

The mouth-watering sum they were willing to invest in the company did nothing to sway my mood.

Immediately they left, Julia walked to where I sat and leaned into me for a kiss but was stunned by my unfriendly look.

“What’s wrong with you? I thought we’re meant to be celebrating? You just got awarded with a very big contract, isn’t this what you wanted?

“You won’t understand, ” I scoffed before getting up from my seat, where I have been declining since the onset of the meeting.

Julia was bent on wearying me out with her questions. I saw her open her mouth to ask another question and I quickly hushed her up.

“Enough of the questions, get your things, my driver will take you home”

She looked at me in disdain before picking her handbag up from the seat nearby.

“Take this” I stretch out my hand with a bundle of notes for her.

“ I should have known that you would treat me like a piece of trash like you always do”

She scurries away without taking a glance at me or the money in my hand.

I couldn’t understand why she was angry. I had only invited her over for the meeting with the investors. I had no plans of getting intimate with her afterwards.

“She should deal with her pain” I scoffed, slapping the currency hard on the table in exasperation.

I sent for my driver and decided to return to the hospital to have my appointment and as well check on the kids I saw earlier on.

Arriving at the hospital, I walked straight to the doctor’s office, suddenly feeling disappointed when I did not see the kids in his office.

“Their mom is up, although she might be down with paramecia”

“That’s really bad for the poor kids. What about their father, or is the lady not married?”

“A man came in earlier to see her, heard the kids address him as their uncle”

I still couldn’t understand why I was suddenly interested in their story. I have never been one to pry into other people’s businesses. It was one of the reasons I was signed into the army.

Doctor Bernard noticed the concern on my face and asked if I was okay.

“Sure, I’m okay. I guess I got really stressed out by the meeting I just finished”

My checkup was finally rounded up, and it was time to go.

As I stood up to go, my eyes caught the name on the file on Dr. Bernard’s table.

“Alice Spicer” I muttered slowly

I had an investigation to make. The hospital is under my family name but, it would be wrong making enquiries about Patients I had no connection with.

I bid the doctor goodbye and stood up to open the door only to see Alec’s icy eyes staring down at me and beside him was the little boy I was admiring earlier in Dr. Bernard’s office.

The little one looked up at me and stretched out his hand for a handshake

“Hey, stop that! You can’t go about greeting every stranger you come across” Alec rebuked.

“Uncle, he’s no stranger,” The little boy replied, smiling happily at me.

“So, how did you know him and from where?

“He looks like my dad”

Alec eyes him sternly and drags him away from me.

“Don’t say that again. Your father traveled, like your mom said and he will be back soon”

It was the little boy’s turn to be mused, he looked at Alec, then me before bursting into laughter.

“I got you!”  He exclaimed. “I was only pranking you both” he announced excitedly.

I felt like picking him up and spanking him silly for playing with the emotions of two grown up adults, moreorso two who are stark enemies.

He was still laughing and totally oblivious of what his silly prank had done to his uncle and me.

“Don’t try this kind of silly prank again, you could get into trouble for doing it” He smirked and brought out his tongue playfully.

“But, uncle Alec, he truly looks like me. Can’t you see that we have the same kind of eyes?”

I watched the two argue and marveled at how much wisdom the little boy possessed.

I had also felt the same connection when I met him and if Alec was his uncle, it meant that he could be Alice’s son.

Suddenly, it dawns on me. Alice was the one the doctor said had Parmesan, and if Alice was the boy’s mother, It meant I could be his father.

Alice had blindly accused me of being responsible for her pregnancy before she left.

And if the boy was mine, whose were the other girls who looked like twins? Could Alice have given birth to triplets while away?
