Chapter One

The rain hammered against the thin windows of the one bedroom apartment like an angry fist. Inside, the air felt heavier than the storm outside.

Ferdinand Parker stood motionless in the middle of the living room, water still dripping from his dark coat onto the faded rug. His chest rose and fell in shallow breaths as he stared at the woman he had loved for the past three years.

Sophia leaned against the kitchen counter, arms crossed, her perfectly painted lips twisted in irritation. She didn’t even bother to hide the contempt in her eyes anymore.

“I’m done, Ferdinand,” she said flatly. “We’re done.”

The words landed like stones in still water. For a moment, he couldn’t speak. He searched her face, looking for any trace of the woman who used to laugh at his stupid jokes, who once cried in his arms when her mother was sick.

“You can’t be serious,” he finally whispered, his voice rough. “Sophia… baby, we’ve been through everything together. I thought…”

“You thought wrong.” She cut him off with a sharp laugh that sliced through him. “Look at you. Still wearing that cheap coat from three years ago. Still driving that old Toyota that breaks down every other week. I’m twenty seven years old, Ferdinand. I didn’t sign up for a lifetime of struggling and counting pennies.”

Ferdinand took a step closer, his hands trembling at his sides. “I have plans. I told you I’m close to something big. Just give me a little more time…”

“Time?” Sophia’s voice rose, sharp and mocking. “I’ve given you three years of my life! Three years of cheap dates and promises that never delivered. Jesse offered me a trip to Paris next month. Paris, Ferdinand. In first class. You can’t even afford a weekend in the next city.”

The name hit him like a punch to the gut. Jesse.

He had suspected it for weeks the late nights, the new expensive perfume, the way she smiled at her phone when she thought he wasn’t looking. But hearing it confirmed still shattered something deep inside him.

“You’ve been seeing him?” His voice cracked.

Sophia rolled her eyes and checked her manicured nails. “For two months now. He’s a real man, Ferdinand. He knows what a woman like me deserves. Not this… this pathetic little life you’re offering.”

Ferdinand’s knees buckled. Before he could stop himself, he dropped down right there on the wet floor, still in his soaked coat.

“Please,” he said, voice breaking. “Don’t do this. I love you, Sophia. I’ll do better. I swear I will. Just… don’t leave me.”

For a second, something almost like pity flickered across her face. Then it was gone, replaced by disgust.

“Get up,” she hissed. “You’re embarrassing yourself.”

But he couldn’t move. The pain in his chest felt like it was splitting him in half. This was the woman he had chosen to live a simple life for. The woman he had hidden his real identity from, just so their love could be real. And now she was throwing it all away for money and luxury.

The sound of the front door opening made him lift his head.

A tall man in an expensive black suit stepped in, shaking rain from his umbrella. Jesse. He took one look at Ferdinand on his knees and let out a low chuckle.

“Wow, babe. You weren’t kidding,” Jesse said, sliding an arm around Sophia’s waist possessively. “This is the guy you’ve been wasting your time with?”

Sophia leaned into him, smiling up at Jesse like Ferdinand wasn’t even in the room anymore. “I told you. Pathetic, right?”

Ferdinand slowly rose to his feet. Water and humiliation clung to him like a second skin. His hands clenched into fists at his sides, but he kept his voice low.

“Is this really what you want?” he asked Sophia, ignoring Jesse completely. “To throw away everything we had… for this?”

Sophia’s expression hardened. “What we had was nothing. I want more. I deserve more. And you… you will never be enough.”

The finality in her voice broke the last piece of him.

Ferdinand stood there for a long moment, staring at the woman he had once believed was his future. Then, without another word, he turned and walked out of the apartment. The door clicked shut behind him with a sound that felt far too final.

The rain outside was colder now. It soaked through his clothes as he stood on the sidewalk, staring at nothing. His phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out with numb fingers.

A message from his mother:

“Your father’s health is failing. The board is getting restless. It’s time to come home, son.”

Ferdinand stared at the screen for a long time. Then he deleted Sophia’s contact, blocked her number, and typed a single reply:

“I’m coming back.”

He slipped the phone back into his pocket and started walking. Each step felt heavier than the last, but something else was growing beneath the pain something cold and sharp.

The man who had begged on his knees tonight was gone.

By the time he reached the sleek black car waiting for him two blocks away the one he had kept hidden for years Ferdinand Parker had already begun turning into someone else.

Someone colder.

Someone untouchable.
